- +Paese infido=, ostensibly a war story, is, in reality, a particular treatment of the fable form. Some of Calvino's earlier war stories contain elements of the fable in varying degrees, but +Paese infido= has in its structure, language, and syntax characteristics which are definite manifestations of this genre. The date of publication, 1953, is significant, for it was at that time that reality (the chronicle of events surrounding the author) began to lose strength as a direct source of inspiration for him. It was then also that he was looking explicitly to the fable as the genre in which to continue to express his themes of the post-war era as he does in the tribology, +I nostri antenati=.
