- Abstract
- Italo Calvino loves and distrusts and displaces language, forces it to its limits and beyond them, makes up tests and defeats for it. It is a mistake not to take seriously his certitude that language is often a form of failure rather than success. Calvino's fiction, with its dazzled and dazzling allusions to the denser meanings of the visible world, is an example of one of literature's most significant half-truths: when you write, you always write the wrong book—a book that can also be just right. Calvino's Invisible Cities, The Castle of Crossed Destinies, and Mr. Palomar are examined.
