Abstract
The article presents the editorial history of Le botteghe color cannella, the volume of Bruno Schulz’s stories translated into Italian by Anna Vivanti Salmon and published with an introduction by Angelo Maria Ripellino, a poet and Slavic literature scholar. Drawing on the documents preserved in the archives of the publishing house Einaudi in Turin and Fondazione Alberto e Arnoldo Mondadori in Milan, the author follows a long and complicated production process of the book. The first trace of interest in Schulz’s oeuvre inside Einaudi surfaces in 1959, in correspondence between Konstanty A. Jeleński and Italo Calvino, then editor of the Turin publishing house. However, publication of the volume did not take place until the autumn of 1970. The methodological inspiration for the article is Outi Paloposki’s (2021) study, which focuses on translations “not in the making,” in other words, on rejections, disruptions, and impasses in translators’ work. Paloposki also argues for shifting the scholarly attention from translations as products to translation events, as she defines the whole process of translation-in-the-making, to the idea to its realization in print. The preserved correspondence of Einaudi’s editors with literary consultants (Angelo Ripellino, Roberto Bazlen), the in-house reviewer (Riccardo Landau), the translator, Schulz’s heirs (Ella Podstolska), and literary agents (Erich Linder, Celina Wieniewska) reveals the extensive network of actors involved in the eleven-year translation event. In the case of Le botteghe color cannella, the impasses in translation-making were caused by difficulty in finding a suitable translator of Schulz’s fiction, and, subsequently, by the family obligations of Vivanti Salmon. The study considers specific problems of the cross-cultural transfer of literary works written in languages of lesser diffusion to the global (semi)center. Additionally, it highlights the participation of eminent figures of Italian culture, such as Calvino, in the reception of Polish literature.
