- Abstract
- This article reconstructs the role played by Italo Calvino in introducing Italian readers to twelve Shakespeare plays published by Einaudi in the early 1950s in a high-circulation fiction series. Calvino supplied the prefaces to translations written by the playwright Cesare Vico Lodovici. The article establishes the attribution to Calvino of these texts and analyses their content and textual strategies. Together, they provide an original analysis of the Shakespearian dramatis personae. An Appendix reproduces Calvino's two earliest prefaces, to Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar, in a translation by Robert S. C. Gordon.
